This is not another conveyor-belt destination. It is an island where you feel like you are visiting distant relatives who are genuinely happy you came. And who will not let you leave the table hungry.
An island people have been returning to for millennia
We are not the first to fall in love with this place. Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Phoenicians were founding ports here long before our era, and in the 1960s Hollywood flew to Famagusta the way people fly to Ibiza today. After the tragedy of 1974 (we wrote about it separately), tourism was reborn in the south and became one of the island's pillars. Today Cyprus welcomes over 4 million visitors a year, and somehow still manages to feel intimate.
According to myth, it was here, in the sea foam near Paphos, that Aphrodite, the goddess of love, was born. Hard to imagine a better patron for an island you return to with your heart. We covered all 12,000 years of this story in our short history of Cyprus.
Who comes here, and what for
- The British, the largest group for decades: they kept a colonial soft spot, and the island kept English, which you can get by with everywhere.
- Poles, Germans, Scandinavians and Israelis, more numerous every year.
- Families, because the beaches are safe and shallow, and Cypriots adore children.
- Couples, because sunsets and quiet villages do the work of expensive dinners here.
- History and nature lovers: ruins, mountains and trails for a whole holiday.
And everyone comes for the same things: sun that almost never lets you down, turquoise sea, food that makes you want to cry with happiness, and people who genuinely like their guests.
When to come
- May-June and September-October: the perfect window. Warm (25-30°C), the sea already heated, no crowds.
- July-August: hot, often over 35°C inland, but the sea breeze keeps the coast livable.
- Winter: 15-20°C, everything green, rain a rare guest. Great for sightseeing and walks in the Troodos mountains.
What to see in the free south
- Beaches: Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa (that is the one in the photo above!), Coral Bay near Paphos, the coasts of Larnaca and Limassol.
- Paphos: UNESCO-listed mosaics, the Tombs of the Kings and the birthplace of Aphrodite.
- The Troodos mountains: cooler air, wine villages (Omodos!), Kykkos monastery and hiking trails.
- Larnaca: the quieter sister of the big resorts, with a lovely promenade and salt lakes full of flamingos.
- Limassol: a lively city with an old town, a marina and festivals.
- Nicosia: the last divided capital of Europe; the southern old town is a gem.
- Mountain villages: tavernas, wine and halloumi straight from the maker. Cyprus at its most authentic.
The food: a reason in itself
Cypriot food is love at first bite. The obligatory ritual is meze: a set of a dozen, sometimes dozens of small dishes that arrive in waves until you beg for mercy. You simply must try: grilled halloumi, souvlaki and sheftalia, moussaka, fresh seafood, loukoumades (honey dumplings) and Commandaria, the oldest dessert wine in the world. Add local wines from the Xynisteri and Maratheftiko grapes, and Cypriot coffee. Food is taken seriously here: slowly, with respect and in good company.
A little secret: in Cyprus the bill often arrives with something extra "from the boss". A dessert, some fruit, a glass of Commandaria. Not because marketing says so. A guest simply has to leave full and smiling, anything else would be a disgrace.
Why we keep coming back
Because Cyprus combines the best of everything: ancient history and modern comfort, lazy beach days and active sightseeing, the parties of Ayia Napa and the silence of mountain villages. Above all, the people. You will hear "kalispera" with a smile, get a table even though "there are no tables", and feel that someone is genuinely glad you came.
