Yes, you can ski in Cyprus. Yes, you can also sunbathe the very same day. No, we are not joking. Meet Troodos: the mountains that troll geography every winter and ruin everyone's idea of "the island of sun".
Picture this: in the morning you sip coffee by the Mediterranean, beach towels drying on the balcony, and in the afternoon you stand on a mountain top in a jacket and goggles. Sounds like a tall tale? In Cyprus it is just a regular winter Tuesday. Welcome to the Troodos mountains, the only place on the island where snow actually falls, and not just in commercials.
Troodos in a nutshell
Troodos is the highest range in Cyprus, and its peak is called, wait for it, Olympus (1,951 m). Yes, the Greeks already had one Olympus, but the island of Aphrodite apparently decided the gods deserved a holiday home. In winter that holiday home turns into a small, charming ski resort. It is not the Alps. It is not even close. And thank goodness: nobody crashes into you here, and the lift queue is a great place to make lifelong friends, mostly because there is no queue.
Facts for the practical minds
- The Troodos Mount Olympus resort is run by the Cyprus Ski Club: 4 lifts and about 4-5 km of runs, from gentle to red.
- Perfect for families, beginners and anyone who wants to simply "give it a go" without taking out a loan for the ski pass.

The headline act: skis and beach in ONE day
This is not a brochure slogan, it is simple logistics: Troodos is about 1-1.5 hours by car from Limassol or Larnaca. So the day plan looks like this:
- Morning: the kids build sandcastles on the beach.
- Noon: you hop in the car, and half an audiobook later you are clicking into skis.
- Afternoon: a few runs with the sea visible IN THE DISTANCE (seriously, you can see it!).
- Evening: souvlaki by the water and stories about how "it was cold but worth it".
A classic Cypriot marriage joke: "Darling, I am leaving you with the kids on the beach, I am off skiing. Don't worry, I'll be back tonight tanned on both sides!"
What else to do in Troodos
- Mountain villages: Omodos, Platres, Kakopetria. Stone houses, fireplaces in the tavernas and views that will drain your phone battery.
- Wine: the region is famous for small wineries and local grape varieties. A tasting is mandatory (the driver bravely tastes grape juice).
- Kykkos monastery: one of the most important and richest in Cyprus, impressive even for those who have "seen enough monasteries".
- Hiking trails: beautiful in winter too, as long as the snow has not buried the signposts.
- Snow madness: sledges, snowmen and grown-up Cypriots enjoying themselves like children. Snow on this island is not weather, it is a social event.
When proper snow falls in Troodos, half the island gets in their cars to come and see it. A traffic jam on the way to a snowman is the most Cypriot thing you will see all winter.
And in summer?
In summer Troodos plays its second role: air conditioning for the whole island. It is 10-15°C cooler than on the coast, plus pine forests, waterfalls and a silence in which you can hear your own thoughts. When the thermometers in Nicosia start crying, the locals escape right here.
